EU GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS DROP BY 4% IN Q1 2024
According to recent Eurostat data, greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU) decreased by 4% in the first quarter of 2024, amounting to 894 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents. This marks a significant improvement compared to the same period in 2023, when emissions reached 931 million tonnes. Despite this reduction, the EU’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) remained stable, with a slight growth of 0.3%. The sectors contributing most to this decrease were electricity and gas supply (-12.6%) and households (-4.4%).
Projects like DEFACTO, funded by the Horizon 2020 program, have played a key role in supporting this reduction through the advancement of lithium-ion battery technologies. DEFACTO’s development of multiscale, multiphysics modeling tools aims to accelerate the creation of next-generation batteries for electric vehicles, improving their range, reducing manufacturing costs, and increasing Europe’s competitiveness in the global energy market.
By enhancing electric vehicle efficiency, DEFACTO directly contributes to Europe’s sustainability goals, helping to further drive down greenhouse gas emissions and support economic growth through cleaner technologies. These innovations are vital as the EU continues to balance environmental responsibility with industrial and economic progress.
